Kachnar (Bauhinia variegata), most commonly used in the classical formulation Kanchnar Guggulu, is one of Ayurveda’s primary remedies for managing benign growths, cysts, and lipomas (Medoj Granthi).

How It Works in Ayurveda

  • Scraping Action (Lekhana): It possesses natural scraping properties that help break down and metabolize sluggish, accumulated fatty tissue (Medha Dhatu).

  • Pacifies Kapha & Clears Toxins (Ama): Lipomas are viewed as an accumulation of aggravated Kapha (heavy/fatty element) and metabolic toxins. Kachnar helps normalize fat metabolism and aids the lymphatic system in draining cellular waste.

  • Anti-inflammatory & Anti-tumor (Granthihara): Traditionally used to help soften, halt the growth of, or gradually reduce glandular and fatty swellings.

Common Forms & Usage

  1. Kanchnar Guggulu (Tablets): The standard oral formulation combining Kachnar bark with Guggulu, Triphala, and Trikatu. Usually taken as 1–2 tablets twice daily with warm water after meals (under physician guidance).

  2. Kachnar Bark Decoction (Kwath): Prepared by boiling the coarse bark powder in water until reduced, taken internally.

  3. External Paste (Lepa): Kachnar powder mixed with warm water, honey, or medicated oils applied topically over the fatty lump.

Realistic Expectations

  • Slow Process: Herbal management of a lipoma requires consistent use over several months (often 3 to 6 months).

  • Variable Response: It typically helps prevent new lipomas from forming or prevents existing ones from enlarging; completely dissolving a mature, encapsulated fatty mass through herbs alone can be difficult and varies by individual.

(Note: Always have any new, growing, or painful subcutaneous lump evaluated by a medical doctor to confirm it is a benign lipoma before starting self-treatment.)
